After taking Portfolio Management and Security Markets under James R. Kay in the spring semester of my senior year in 1963, I knew how I wanted to make my living. I was never in danger of being an outstanding student, but I made an A, and it inspired me to take an MBA at SMU. After working for 22 years with both regional and national investment counseling firms, I went out on my own in August 1987, joining with a partner two months before Black Monday in October 1987. Perfect timing! We survived that, and in 1996 I established Garver Capital Group, Inc., a Registered Investment Advisor. I have been a Chartered Financial Analyst for 45 years. My education at the University of Texas was a great foundation to structure a career in investment counseling. At 75 I am still working at what I love to do, investing because I enjoy it. It does not get any better than that!
